M. André-Marc Aymé informs the Society that Vardill’s short story The Czar and the Czarowitz (Annals of Public Justice No. 6, The European Magazine, Vol. 78, July 1820, pp. 9-13) was plagiarized by Émile Dupré de Saint-Maure (1772-1854) and appeared in L’Hermite en Russie, volume 2, pp. 279-344 (1829). Dupré de Saint-Maure changed the name of the heroine from Feodorowna to Varinka.
The French version was subsequently translated into Flemish, German, and Spanish.
